The History of Carlsbad: From Mineral Springs to Flower Fields and LEGOLAND

How a spa town named after a European resort became a beach city known for flowers, lagoons and LEGOLAND.

Carlsbad's story is one of reinvention: from native villages and ranchos to a railroad stop with mineral water, to the city with flower fields and a famous theme park. Here is the timeline.

    The Portola expedition

    Spanish explorers on the first European land expedition through Alta California pass native villages in the area.

    Rancho Agua Hedionda

    During the Mexican period the southern part of what is now Carlsbad is granted as Rancho Agua Hedionda to Juan Maria Marron.

  4. The spa town
  5. 1882

    Captain Frazier's well

    Former sailor John Frazier digs a well, and the water proves similar to famous European spas. It is bottled and sold, and a village grows around it.

    Named for a spa in Bohemia

    The new town takes the name Carlsbad after Karlsbad, the well-known spa town in Bohemia, and a company forms to develop it.

  7. A city of its own
  8. 1952

    Carlsbad incorporates

    Carlsbad incorporates on July 16, partly to avoid being annexed by its neighbor, Oceanside.

  9. 1959

    Palomar Airport opens

    The county opens a single-runway airport that would later be annexed by the city and renamed McClellan-Palomar Airport.

  10. 1965

    La Costa is born

    The name La Costa is given to a new golf resort, now the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa.

  12. 1993

    The Flower Fields open to the public

    The family behind the region's famous poinsettias opens their ranch fields to visitors, and the spring tradition of blooming ranunculus begins.

  13. 1999

    LEGOLAND arrives

    LEGOLAND California opens in March, the first LEGOLAND outside Europe, on land once part of the flower ranch.

  14. 2015

    The desalination plant is completed

    Construction of the Carlsbad Desalination Plant, one of the largest in the country, is completed in December.
